  • I have thought about this, and of course there is nothing we can show that says this is not allowed but rather there is nothing that says this is appropriate either. I have from the coders desk reference.... these examinations would be ordered as a gross microscopic pathology exam or gross andmicroscopic tissue exam. Tissue is submitted in a container labled with the tissue source, preop dx, and pt identiers. Specimens from separate sites are submitted in separate containers. codes 88304-88309 describe levels of service for specimens requiring additional levels of work due to presumed presence of disease. Also point out in the book these are designated as pathology/lab codes which he is not providing. There is a small definiton in the front of the CPT section that may help. But unless he is doing the microscopic exam then he cannot bill this code and it is fraud.
